Dicoflor

Dicoflor is an effective and safe probiotic, ideal for your child and your family. It contains live cultures of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG with a positive effect on health confirmed in clinical trials. When using Dicoflor, you will protect your nearest and dearest when they need it.

What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. They have many positive properties which have been confirmed in clinical trials. The word “probiotic” originates from the Greek pro bios and means “for life”.

Brief history
Although probiotic organisms have been with the man for ages, as they are naturally present in milk products and pickles, their beneficial properties were discovered only in the early 20th century. The discoverer was a Russian researcher and scientist – Ilya Mechnikov who studied the longevity of Bulgarian peasants eating naturally fermented milk products. In the past, the beneficial properties of probiotics were attributed to the whole group of lactic acid bacteria to which they belong. Currently, we know that probiotic properties are specific to an individual strain. This means that the properties of probiotics are strain specific.

What is a strain?
In microbiology, a strain is a population of microorganisms within the same species, differentiated by certain specific attributes. A name of a correctly described strain consists of three parts. The first part is the genus name, the second part is the species name, and the third part is the name of the strain to which the bacterium belongs.
Here is an example of a correctly described strain:
Lactobacillus (genus) rhamnosus (species) GG (strain),
such a strain is contained in Dicoflor products.
To benefit from taking a probiotic, such a product should be used whose beneficial properties and safety of use have been confirmed in clinical trials. Bacteria of the same genus (e.g. Lactobacillus) and species (e.g. rhamnosus) may belong to different strains, and thus they may differ from each other. Therefore, it is the action of specific bacterial strains that is evaluated in clinical trials and the trial results obtained cannot be attributed to other strains, even within the same species and genus.

Dicoflor, which contains the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG strain, has the largest number of scientifically documented recommendations for use among all products that are currently available in the market. It also has a very high content of bacteria beneficial for health in a single portion, which is a guarantee of cost-effectiveness of the treatment.

Definition of an ideal probiotic
An ideal probiotic meets the following conditions:

  • it occurs naturally in the human gut,
  • it survives in the gastrointestinal tract environment,
  • it is able to colonise the gut,
  • it is not pathogenic or harmful,
  • it has a beneficial effect on the host’s health.

Such a probiotic is the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) strain contained in the Dicoflor brand products. The efficacy and safety of LGG use have been confirmed in clinical trials. This strain has been described so far in over 500 scientific publications.

When should Dicoflor be used?

To reduce the risk of complications of antibiotic treatment
The following may occur during or after antibiotic treatment:

  • diarrhoea,
  • nausea,
  • taste perversion.

Preventing the side effects associated with antibiotic treatment is one of the objectives of Dicoflor use. Clinical trials have confirmed that LGG reduces the risk of post-antibiotic diarrhoea. As it has been evidenced, bacteria need about 4 weeks after the end of antibiotic treatment to re-colonise the gut. Complete reinstatement of the bacterial flora may take even up to 6 months or longer. That is why Dicoflor administration should be started together with initiation of the antibiotic use. The minimum recommended daily portion is 5 drops of Dicoflor drops, 2 capsules/sachets of Dicoflor 30 or one capsule/sachet of Dicoflor 60.

To shorten the duration of infectious diarrhoea
Especially in children, diarrhoea is a serious health problem and one of the most common reasons for seeing a doctor. Leaving it untreated may lead to dangerous complications such as dehydration, electrolyte deficiencies and general weakening of the body and malaise. The most important element of the dietetic treatment in a child with diarrhoea is to deliver fluids and replenish electrolytes. However, this does not affect the duration of symptoms. During diarrhoea, the use of Dicoflor shortens the disease by up to 2 days. The recommended daily portion is 6 drops of Dicoflor drops twice per day, or 2 capsules/sachets of Dicoflor 60. Dicoflor should be used for at least 5 days. It is also possible to use Floridral which combines the action of the probiotic LGG strain and ingredients of an oral rehydration solution.

In immunity support
Episodes of decreased immunity in children are a common problem. Prolonged and frequent respiratory tract infections, absence from school and kindergarten, the need to use leaves from work for taking care of the child are the worries of many parents. It has been proven that taking Dicoflor for at least 3 months reduces the risk of upper respiratory tract infections in children by as much as 34%. The recommended daily portion is 1 drop of Dicoflor drops or one capsule/sachet of Dicoflor 30.

To alleviate abdominal pain
The beneficial LGG bacteria contained in Dicoflor regulate digestive processes and improve gastrointestinal tract function. They regulate the natural microflora present in our body. As evidenced in clinical trials, Dicoflor administration reduces the frequency and severity of functional abdominal pain in the youngest patients, thus improving their wellbeing. The recommended daily portion is 3 drops of Dicoflor drops twice daily or one capsule/sachet of Dicoflor 30 twice daily. Dicoflor should be used for at least 8 weeks.

Other uses of Dicoflor
The efficacy of LGG has also been confirmed in other indications such as decreasing the incidence of hospital infections of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems and alleviation of cystic fibrosis symptoms.
